Ahn Hyun-soo (Victor Ahn, 38), who was naturalized as a Russian citizen, was unable to return to Korea, and the Russian Skating Federation proposed to return as a leader.
Russian Ice Skating Federation President Nikolai Gulayev (57) announced on the 1st (Korean time) that he would invite Ahn Hyun-soo, a former short track world champion, to the event.
Chairman Gulayev suggested Ahn Hyun-soo to return home through an interview with TASS, a news agency run by the Russian government.
Ahn Hyun-soo became a naturalized Russian citizen in 2011 under the name ‘Victor Ahn’ and retired from his active career at the end of the 2019-20 season. From 2020 to 2022, he coached and led the Chinese national team at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Chairman Gulayev said, “I know that he wants to continue his short track coaching career in Korea,” but also expressed his position, saying, “I will contact Hyun-soo Ahn, who has won six Olympic gold medals, in the near future.”
“In Hyun-soo is still a Russian citizen. He even agreed to the request to remain as a player and work as a leader. This time, I will definitely contact you.”
‘TAS’ anticipated that “Chairman Gulayev will deliver a definite and special message” and predicted a good proposal for Ahn Hyun-soo to choose to return to Russia.
Dmitry Sbyshev (53), Vice-Chairman of the House of Representatives, said in an interview with the daily newspaper ‘Sport Express’ last month, “Ahn Hyun-soo won a medal for Russia at the Sochi Winter Olympics,” and recalled nine years ago positively.
Meanwhile, Ahn Hyun-soo was finally eliminated from the open recruitment of short track coaches at the Seongnam City Hall Workplace Athletics Department.
City Hall is known to have reflected various criticisms surrounding Ahn Hyun-soo’s attempt to return to Korea and reflected it in the evaluation, and attention is expected to be drawn to what path Ahn Hyun-soo will take. 안전놀이터
