Uruguay has advanced to the final of the U20 World Cup, where it will attempt to win its first title in three tournaments.
Uruguay defeated Israel 1-0 in the 안전놀이터 quarterfinals of the U20 World Cup 2023 on Monday (Sept. 9) at La Plata Stadium in Argentina, thanks to a 16th-minute goal from Andersson Duarte.
Uruguay, who reached the final of the tournament in 1997 and 2013 but finished runners-up to Argentina and France, respectively, will be looking to win their first ever title after reaching the final for the third time in their history. The final will take place at 6 a.m. on Dec. 12 at La Plata Stadium.
Israel, who qualified for the tournament for the first time ever and made a surprise run through the group stage by eliminating Japan in the final Group C match before knocking out Uzbekistan in the round of 16 and eventual champions Brazil in the quarterfinals, will play the third-place game.
After a dull 0-0 first half, Uruguay missed a crucial chance six minutes into the second half. After Franco Gonzalez broke down the right flank and cut back into the box, Duarte’s right-footed shot hit the post.
But 10 minutes later, Duarte made amends with the game-winner. After Alan Maturo’s left-footed mid-range shot was saved by the keeper, Duarte raced through the Israeli defense and slotted home with his left foot. Third goal of the tournament.
Uruguayan soccer star Federico Valverde (Real Madrid) was on hand to share the joy with his juniors.
