Was the ‘Home Run King’ title a mirage…Kim’s ex-colleague ‘crashed’, MIL ‘awaiting release’

Luke Voit is on a downward spiral after winning the home run title in the 2020 shortened season. This time, the Milwaukee Brewers have designated him for assignment (DFA).

The Milwaukee Brewers designated Luke Voit for assignment on July 30. After being removed from the 40-man roster, Voit was placed on the disabled list.

Voit made his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 before joining the New York Yankees in 2018. Voit made the jump to the big leagues in 2018, hitting .322 with 15 home runs and a 1.069 OPS in 47 games with St. Louis and the Yankees, and continued his strong play the following year, hitting .263 with 21 home runs, 62 RBIs and a .842 OPS in 118 games.

He also had a “career-high” season with the Yankees. In 56 games in 2020, a shortened season due to COVID-19, Voit hit .277 with 22 homers, 52 RBIs and a .948 OPS in 59 games. At the time, Voit’s 22 home runs helped him win the American League’s home run title. But then he began a steep decline.

Voit was signed to a minor league deal when he came to Milwaukee. He opted out at the end of spring training, but returned to Milwaukee just before opening day. However, after having the worst season of his career, batting .211 with no home runs and a .548 OPS in 22 games this year, he was eventually released.

Once he is DFA’d by Milwaukee, Voit will be eligible for assignment if another team wants to sign him for a week. However, if no team expresses interest, he can either be released through waivers or remain in the organization’s minor league system. Voit has been on a downward spiral since winning the home run title.
